Lustration law, another slap in the face for Berisha

Posted On: 01/02/2010

The Socialist Party of Albania has reacted following the unanimous decision of the Constitutional Court to repeal the Lustration Law, which was adopted by the ruling majority.  MP Shegush Ligori said that the Constitutional Court has repealed for the seventeenth time in four years the laws adopted by the DP-led majority by declaring them as anti-constitutional.

“Today, in less than one week, Sali Berisha marked another shameful record in the history of the Albanian democracy, a record that can be marked in Venezuela, but not in Albania that asks to be integrated in European Union. Today, the Constitutional Court has certified the seventeenth attempted attack against the Constitution by unanimously repealing the Lustration Law, a law that was objected not only by the Socialist Party, but also by the Helsinki Committee and the Council of Europe. The files should be opened, but through a new law and the Socialist Party is ready to offer its contribution; a new law that should respect first the Constitution and the recommendations of Venice Committee. Sali Berisha should know that the investigation about the crimes of the past can not be undertaken to expatiate today’s sins.”
